Providence
In January 2019, I had the pleasure of stepping into a special needs classroom as a preschool teacher with Providence at the Beddington location. I was very excited and ready for yet another unique teaching experience.
My classroom consisted of two seperate classes, a morning and then an afternoon class. Each class consisted of 12 students all who were PUF funded due to special learning needs. I worked alongside two educational/therapeutic assistants, a speech language pathologist and an occupational therapist. We worked and collaborated as a team to help meet the needs and IPP goals that were set out at the beginning of the school year. I also held weekly team meetings to help plan for upcoming themes and to discuss individual students and to assess progress of their individual goals.
My teaching was theme and play based. Because I was stepping in for another teacher, I followed the themes that were determined at the beginning of school year in collaboration with the other classrooms at the Beddington sight. Some of the themes included Farm, Ocean, Pete the Cat, Spring/Bugs, Camping, etc. Like my previous position as a Kindergarten maternity leave teacher I added my own flare and ideas to each unit. Each day we made sure we focused on helping students work towards achieving their IPP goals, and geared themed activities to help students meet these goals.
I had a blast teaching these beautiful children in this unique environment and being part of a trans-disiplinary team!
