Burdett School
My Professional Placement I (PSI) was located in Burdett, a hamlet in Alberta, Canada. The school atmosphere is quite unique due to 90% of the student population being Mennonite. Burdett School offers an English based education but many for many of the students, English is their second language (ESL). To support the majority of the students, the school also offers a German language and Mennonite culture/religion class.
This placement was challenging but I was very thankful for the opportunity. I was able to learn how to adapt my teaching style to accommodate for ESL learner needs. During my time at the school I had the opportunity to observe an array of teaching styles and subjects from grades 1 - 9. As for my own teaching, I mainly taught: Grade 5 - Math, Science, and Language Arts; Grade 7 - ESL Language Arts; and Grades 1-3 - ESL Language Arts. I also assisted and taught the Nutrition and Cooking Classes from grades 1-6.
