I am excited to start working with the Smart Board technology and feel as though to master it, it will be a lot of trial and error. There are a lot of different aspects and tools etc., that will take time to learn and understand how they all work to make a successful Smart Board presentation. Well, here's to teaching in age of technology.
Today we learned a little bit about Smart Boards. I was pretty excited because this is a new source of classroom technology for me. I have only encountered this technology while being a parent helper in my children's classrooms. I was fascinated in how it worked and how interactive it can be. I am used to the age old chalkboards, whiteboards and overhead projectors.

In all honesty, I did not learn a whole lot of new information today. After already completing Bachelor of Arts degree, I have had several courses that have required power point presentations. For most of these classes, especially the second year classes, some of my professors were kind enough to go through the basics of creating an effective power point presentation. All of which were part of today's lesson.
I guess if I had to choose something that was relatively new information to me, it would be that technology in education should be enabling. Technology used in the classroom should only be used as a tool in a lesson, not the focus of the lesson. If the use of technology takes significant time away from the lesson or is distracting to the lesson, then it is probably best to use a different means of communication. This is a concept I'll have to frequently keep close. For me much of the technology used today I am very unfamiliar with. Therefore I will have to make sure that I am completely comfortable using the technology before hand, as well as having a backup plan just in case I encounter technical difficulties! As technology is ever evolving, so is the medium in which students today learn and interact with others. It only seems fit that with today's generation of learners, an avenue to reach students is through the technology that they know and understand. A blog, which is a discussion based website ensuing a variety of formats and subjects, has become increasingly popular in recent years. The vast majority of these bloggers are under the age of twenty. Therefore it makes sense to use this type of platform to teach and educate students.
If blogging sites are set up for the safety and education of students, blogging can become a powerful teaching tool. Blogging permits students to all be on a level playing field and allows for an environment which may not be as intimidating in comparison to the traditional classroom setting and has the potential for greater student participation. Not only that, but blogging also gives way for a multitude of other types of media/technology to be integrated into lessons/discussions that allows for all learning types to be accommodated for. Blogging also affords the luxury of taking the classroom outside the school. Blog sites can be accessed from anywhere with internet or network capabilities. Participants can limited to only those from within the class or from others from around the globe. This format also allows for other students, teachers and parents to be more aware of and involved in this learning environment. Another bonus to blogs is that assignments and classroom materials easily be managed and organized for both teachers and the students. Overall there appears to be numerous benefits of integrating blogs into the classroom learning environment. |
